Economy, security, climate – and of course Russia: these are the topics of the German-Indian government consultations on Friday. Little by little, half the cabinet arrives in New Delhi.
On Thursday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz sets off on a three-day trip to India, the focus of which will be the German-Indian government consultations. Five ministers from his cabinet will also take part on Friday: Robert Habeck (Economy, Greens), Annalena Baerbock (Outside, Greens), Boris Pistorius (Defense, SPD), Hubertus Heil (Labor, SPD) and Bettina Stark-Watzinger (Education, FDP).
It will be about closer cooperation in the areas of economy, climate protection and security, but also about recruiting skilled workers from the world’s most populous country. India also has a role to play in efforts to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine because it has good connections to both Moscow and the West.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have just returned from a trip to Russia when he receives Scholz. On Thursday he will take part in the summit meeting of the so-called Brics states, which see themselves as a counterweight to the G7 of leading Western economic powers.
Economics Minister Habeck and Labor Minister Heil set off for the Indian capital on Wednesday and will hold initial talks there on Thursday. Pistorius flies on Scholz’s government plane, Baerbock travels from Paris and Stark-Watzinger comes from Kiev via Poland and Qatar with a line to New Delhi.
