Robert Fico, who won the Slovak elections this weekend with his Smer-SD party, said in an initial response that his country “has bigger problems” than providing aid to Ukraine. He wants to start peace talks between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.
During his campaign, Fico had already announced that Ukraine would no longer be able to count on Slovak military support if he were in charge. On Sunday he emphasized that his opinion has remained unchanged. He did not say how he wants to start peace talks.
Fico says he is waiting for a mandate from Slovak President Zuzana Caputová before starting coalition talks. He thinks he will need two weeks to form a government.
Earlier on Sunday, Michal Simecka from the Progresívne Slovensko (PS) party, which came second in the elections, also said that he wants to form a coalition despite Smer-SD’s win. He hopes to find support for this from smaller, progressive parties.
In the meantime, almost all votes have been counted. Fico and his Smer-SD finish in first place with about 23 percent of the votes. PS follows at some distance with 17 percent.
