The real estate portfolio of Robert De Niro, King of New York
Born in New York, Robert De Niro also grew up there and spent most of his adult life there. A true child of the country. ” I travel, I go to Paris, to London, to Rome, but I always say to myself: “Nothing beats New York.” It is the most exciting city in the world today. It’s like that. And that’s all “says the actor. His love for his hometown has led him to invest a great deal of time and energy in the local artistic and cultural scene. With his partner Jane Rosenthal, he created TriBeCa Productions in 1989. He also opened the Tribeca Grill in 1990 and is co-owner of the Greenwich Hotel. He was even given the keys to the city that never sleeps. Better still, the city will dedicate an entire film festival to his work (the De Niro Con, scheduled for fall 2023). But if De Niro is an indestructible icon of the city, it’s probably because he made the firm choice never to live elsewhere. The actor does not pay for words, and he keeps his word. Below, we invite you to take a look at Robert De Niro’s many properties in New York, including a breathtaking penthouse in Greenwich Village.

One of De Niro’s homes was bequeathed to him by his father, the late painter Robert De Niro Sr. On the beach in Montauk, it was to this house that the actor’s father regularly retreated to escape the bustle of the city; he bequeathed it to De Niro Jr. upon his death in 1993. The beachfront property is said to span over half a hectare, with a 210 square meter dwelling and approximately 70 square meter terrace. It was built in the 1950s, but not much is known about its aesthetics. In 2017, De Niro filed a request to have the existing structure razed in order to have a larger house built, but it was ultimately rejected. He still owns this residence.
1997: a family property north of the city
The man of Taxi Driver Although he may be a Hollywood legend, he remains deeply attached to his New York roots. In 1997, he paid $1.5 million to buy a property in the small upstate town of Gardiner, less than two hours by car from Manhattan. Since then, it has been his main residence. The house, which would be around 210 square meters, sits on 30 hectares of land. It was built in place of an original 18th century farmhouse. De Niro is said to have renovated the place to accommodate the needs of his growing family; there are now six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, and the space that the barn occupied has been converted into a huge relaxation area, with gymnasium, boxing room, games room, swimming pool and sauna, basketball court- ball and even a small film studio. The estate also has two guest houses, a tennis court and a small ski slope (!).

The co-owner of the famous Nobu restaurant then bought an apartment in Central Park West for the tidy sum of 23 million dollars. Almost nothing has leaked out about the luxury apartment, which is located on the fifth floor, but in 2012 it made headlines when it was completely devastated, along with part of the building, by a fire caused by a faulty dryer. If De Niro and his family were abroad at the time of the events, the neighborhood testified to the disaster: ” Right above my head, flames 3 meters high burst from the window of the fifth floor “explained a man. After the tragedy, De Niro had to find other places to put his suitcases while waiting for the apartment to be renovated.
2012: a duplex in Greenwich village
The actor and his wife Grace Hightower then rent a superb duplex in Greenwich Village. The 1920s building was originally a maraschino cherry factory, so the layout of the place is quite unique. With, among other things, a spectacular hall on two floors, a glazed wall overlooking a perfectly landscaped interior courtyard, and three fireplaces, in the living room, the library and the master bedroom. Five bedrooms and four bathrooms are spread over an area of more than 1000 square meters, to which are added 480 square meters of private outdoor space. The couple lived there for two years. The penthouse was then sold for $18 million in 2018.
Later that same year, De Niro rented a luxurious 560 square meter apartment occupying an entire floor in Central Park West. Monthly rent ? $125,000. Located on the 35th floor of the building, the apartment has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, with a breathtaking view of the city (it is facing east, west and south, with views of Central Park, midtown Manhattan and the ‘Hudson River). However, the actor will not stay there long; in 2014, the unit was up for sale again for $55 million.

2014: a penthouse at the top of the Greenwich Hotel
Robert De Niro’s next real estate adventure takes place at the top of the Greenwich Hotel, which he co-owns with Ira Druckier. The Hollywood icon enlists renowned Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki to create a penthouse suite inspired by the traditional Japanese concept of wabi, which revolves around the idea of finding beauty in imperfection. The elegant aesthetic of the 630 square meter property emphasizes neutral color palettes and the use of wood, stone and other reclaimed materials. « The industrial treatment of the top is in perfect harmony with the building below “, specifies Mr. Axel Vervoordt about the marriage between the hotel and the penthouse which overhangs it. The apartment, with its three bedrooms and two bathrooms, is available for rent, but it’s a safe bet that Robert De Niro occupies it when he sees fit.
