According to Robbie Williams, it is impossible to join a boy or girl band without suffering from mental problems. The singer believes that his old boy band Take That is a perfect example of this.
In conversation The Times Williams says Take That shows what happens when young people form a boy band and become more successful than expected. All his boy band colleagues experienced problems at some point.
“Gaz (Gary Barlow, ed.) had bulimia and agoraphobia, Howard considered committing suicide. Then you have Mark, who ended up in rehab. Jason, who just disappeared. And then you have me,” says Williams. “That’s five out of five.”
The 49-year-old artist sees mental health issues as a prerequisite for being creative. “If boy band members don’t have those problems at the beginning, they will at the end. No one comes out of it okay. You name anyone.”
Williams, who became very successful as a solo artist after his stint with Take That, has been open about his own struggles with his mental health in the past. These problems are also discussed in the documentary about his life, which can be seen on Netflix from November 8.
