Rob Jetten is the new party leader of D66. He received 93 percent of the party’s vote.
The 36-year-old Jetten is currently caretaker minister for Climate and Energy. As party leader, he succeeds Sigrid Kaag, who announced last month that he was leaving politics.
Of the 32,000 D66 members, 30 percent cast a vote. Jetten thanks the members for the support. “That gives great energy to the campaign.” The new party leader says he wants to unite the country. “Let’s leave all old and false contradictions in the past. It’s time to just do it.”
D66 party chairman Victor Everhardt has a lot of confidence in Jetten as the new party leader. “As climate minister, he has led the Netherlands to the absolute top of Europe by bringing left and right together and achieving results.” According to Everhardt, Jetten is “the face of the new generation”. “He brings the new energy that the Netherlands craves for.”
‘New political generation’
Jetten put himself forward as a candidate for the list leader last month. “It is necessary for a new political generation to take the helm,” he explained in the AD.
Jetten came to the House of Representatives for D66 in 2017. He succeeded Alexander Pechtold as party chairman a year later. Last January he became a minister in the Rutte IV cabinet.
Before he became active in national politics, Jetten worked for rail manager ProRail. He was also chairman of the Young Democrats, the youth branch of D66, and was a member of the Nijmegen city council.
