Mazda’s two-seat convertible sports car “Roadster” is selling well. At the end of 2021″Reason why the “Roadster” sells to young people due to corona misfortune]but in 2022 sales increase even more.
To give specific figures, the annual domestic sales volume of Roadster is 4434 units in 2020, 5394 units in 2021 and 7696 units by the end of September 2022. 855 units per month on average. At this rate, annual sales in 2022 will reach 10,260 units.
It is the momentum to surpass 8542 units in 2015 right after its debut. In fact, when divided into 12 months from October 2021 to September 2022, the number of units sold is 10234. It exceeded “10,000 units per year”.
What is surprising is that the roadster that sells so well is not a “new model”. The current model (common name: ND model) was released in May 2015. In other words, it is a long-selling product which has reached its seventh year this year.
From the Showa era to the beginning of the Heisei era, the typical model change cycle for passenger cars was four to six years. Even now, if it exceeds five years, the model life will be in the second half, and the “new car model” image will disappear.

From this general point of view, the current roadster is already out of season. However, I can’t hide my surprise because sales are increasing on the right shoulder.
Domestic sports car market booming
So why is the Roadster, which has been in its seventh year since its debut, still selling well? There are two possible reasons. One is the “market tailwind” and the other is “Mazda’s efforts.”
The tailwind of the market is the high degree of attention paid to sports cars. Indeed, the domestic market for sports cars can now be called booming. Excluding imported cars, the domestic sports car market consists of Roadster, Toyota “GR86” “GR Supra”, Lexus “LC” “RC”, Nissan “Fairlady Z” “GT-R”, Subaru “BRZ” will be the main members.
According to Mazda data, the total sales volume of these sports cars will increase from around 15,000 units in 2020 to around 17,000 units in 2021, and will further increase in 2022, from January to September, exceeding around 25,000 units. The reason for this market surge is simple.
