A fire was started in the verge along the A28 near Rogat on Wednesday evening around nine o’clock. Several hay bales have been set on fire next to the highway.
It appears to be related to the farmers’ protests of the day. About fifteen tractor units were lined up next to the hard shoulder. One of them came with a new load of hay to throw on the fire. As a result, the roadside fire (which started small) is becoming increasingly extensive.
The fire brigade was called to extinguish the fire, but later declined. According to a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region, the fire brigade was recalled because ‘the police are present and the farmers will put out the fire themselves’.
The arson took place in the direction of travel from De Wijk to Meppel. The police present also did not intervene at first.
