A total of 31,539 traffic accidents with material damage and casualties, of which 6,609 were serious, with 531 deaths, occurred in our country in 2022, the National Statistical Institute announced. Among the victims are 29 children and twice as many young people. A total of 8,422 people were injured in these accidents last year (6,656 minor and 1,766 serious).
Compared to 2021, NSI reports an increase in crashes of 8.7%, of injured by 10.7%, while deaths are 5.3% less.
The number of accidents due to improper actions of drivers remains the largest – 6,470, and every fourth such accident (25.5%) is due to excessive or inappropriate speed.
Of the total number of road traffic accidents in 2022, the largest relative share is pedestrian collision – 23.2%, and collision between motor vehicles – 33.9%. The most people died in a head-on collision with a motor vehicle – 99, in a collision with a pedestrian – 89, and in a side collision with a motor vehicle – 58.
The number of people killed in road accidents in 2022 was the highest in November – 63, or 11.9% of all victims, and the lowest was in February – 28 people.
During the day, the largest number of fatal accidents occurred between 14:00 and 16:00 – a total of 813 with 75 fatalities. The blackest day turns out to be Friday – it is on the day before the weekends that road accidents with the most injuries were registered – 16.5% of all. The number of dead was the highest on Saturday – 17.7% of all victims, and the lowest on Wednesday – 11.3%.
The most victims of accidents were in the regions of Plovdiv – 47, Sofia – 43, Stara Zagora – 34, Burgas – 32, and Ruse – 29. At the opposite pole are Smolyan – with only three deaths, Vidin with four, Gabrovo, Yambol and Targovishte – with seven each.
However, in terms of the number of road accidents, Sofia is the undisputed leader with 8,697 accidents. They are followed by Varna – 2544, Plovdiv – 2357, and Burgas – 1634. Only Smolyan is below 300 – 298.
The black statistics show that out of all 531 victims, 29 were minors – 4 under the age of 9, 8 from 10- to 14-year-olds and 17 dead at the age of 15-17. But there are also quite a few young people who died in accidents – 20 people aged 18-20 and 25 aged 21-25.
The deadliest roads in Bulgaria in 2022 were the so-called first class, where 115 people died. 88 people died in second-class schools, 84 in third-class schools, and 42 in municipal schools. There were 32 victims in accidents on highways, which is several times less than those on other roads around the country. The data for this indicator are similar for 2021 as well.
