Road safety in the Tarn-et-Garonne: “We are among the worst departments in France for the number of road deaths”

the essential
With nine deaths on the roads as of June 30 (+1 dead compared to 2021), and a number of accidents almost doubled (+ 47%), the Prefecture is sounding the alarm for the easing of risky behaviors by motorists on the roads of Tarn- et-Garonne. In the underlying trend to explain these bad figures, a sharp increase in delinquents driving under the influence of alcohol (+ 21%), drugs (+ 28%) and even speeding. To counter this trend, the prefecture announces strengthened checks of gendarmes and police throughout the summer.

The Departmental Observatory for Road Safety (ODSR) of Tarn-et-Garonne, has just published its monthly barometer for June 2022. A report that allows us to draw the conclusions of accidentology for this first half of the year.

With nine deaths on the road from 1is last January (+ 1 death compared to 2021), a number of accidents that almost doubled (+ 47%) and that of hospitalized injured (+ 36%), the prefecture of Tarn-et-Garonne rings the alarm bell related to the relaxation of risky behaviors by motorists on the roads of the department.

“With 9 people killed in the first six months, the trend is not exactly good”, confirms the new sub-prefect of Montauban, Julien Henrard, who agreed at our request to take stock in the presence of the departmental road safety coordinator. Didier Bourdon.

The trend of this month of July only confirms it with two other motorists who lost their lives on 6 and 17 July in Mansonville et Montech. The number of victims therefore amounts to eleven on 25 July on the roads of the Tarn-et-Garonne.

On 5 July in Lacourt-Saint-Pierre, the fatal accident of a municipal councilor at the wheel of his car, the latter suffering a heart attack while driving, was not counted among the road victims.

“Since the beginning of the year there has been a relaxation of risky behaviors on the part of motorists”, continues the sub-prefect, referring to what has already been confirmed by the boss of the Tarn-et-Garonne gendarmerie group. in our columns during the 2021 accident report. “The car has become a stress reliever since leaving confinement,” admitted Colonel Stéphane Authier.

The trend does not appear to have reversed in recent months. “The infringements recorded by the 34 speed cameras in the department, which increased by + 40% compared to last year, only confirm this”, drives the nail Julien Henrard. The risk factors are always the same: excessive speed, alcohol (+ 21%) and drugs (+ 28%) while driving.

If the prefecture still intends to continue to carry out preventive actions aimed in particular at vulnerable users (pedestrians and two-wheelers) with a dedicated budget of 66,000 euros this year, the current trend is for greater controls throughout the summer “to reduce this accident. “.

“There will be blue all summer”

During the last security meeting in the prefecture, Chantal Mauchet, the prefect, confirmed his willingness to do everything to reverse this bad trend. “Strengthened controls, especially at the end of the evening, and when leaving the discos, which remains a delicate moment, will continue”, indicates the sub-prefect.

A first fist operation already took place on 2 July at the instigation of the prosecutor of Montauban who closed the city of Ingres between 4 and 6 in the morning. “We are not here to prevent young people from partying, the prosecutor Bruno Sauvage declared at the time. The goal is to make motorists aware of the risks. When you drink, you don’t drive. Important”.

These road checks will be all the more marked on the occasion of this weekend of crossings between July and August residents. “There will be blue for the whole summer”, warns Sub-Prefect Henrard in the form of a warning, recalling that these repressive actions are all the more justified as the “department is in sixth place for the number of road deaths per million inhabitants. , with 73 deaths per million inhabitants against 45 on average in mainland France “.
