Unsurprisingly, with the introduction of the curfew, the development of teleworking and the numerous restrictions linked to the health crisis (restaurants and bars closed, etc.), trips were less numerous. And road mortality decreased. In January, 171 people died on the roads, or 35% less than a year ago when we could move around freely. This development applies to most categories, with the notable exception of motorcyclists: twenty-nine dead, eight more than in January 2020 and five more than in January 2019.
In road safety, we admit that we have no explanation for this one-off and trompe-l’oeil increase. The number of motorcyclists killed in recent years has continued to decline: – 26% between 2000 and 2019.
Twenty-eight recommendations
However, it is in this general context of decline that experts from the National Road Safety Council have just submitted a document entitled “Two-wheelers: towards a use adapted to their vulnerability”
, bringing together twenty-eight recommendations.
The first of these relate to the power of two-wheelers and the speeds practiced. Experts recommend speed controls that are just as good for two-wheelers as they are for other vehicles. Or that the insurers can set up, on motorcycles, a system continuously recording the exceedances of the maximum authorized speed in exchange for a significant reduction in the insurance premium
