A mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter with 7 years of experience on the domestic stage defeated a powerhouse with 11 major tournaments in his first overseas match. It was also the joy I experienced in the first Korea-Japan match in my life.

In Buntai, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, MMA, boxing, kickboxing, and grappling were featured as the opening event of the Martial Arts Expo hosted by the Japan Martial Arts Consortium on October 19. It received attention from the local fighting community, including being broadcast by OTT service U-Next.

It is a competition that also serves as a charity event to help victims of the earthquake that occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture in January 2024. Yoon Tae-young (28) defeated Daichi Abe (33, Japan) by TKO in 4 minutes and 7 seconds in the second round of a mixed martial arts contract weighing 83 kg.

Road FC dispatched Yoon Tae-young through KMMA Fighter Agency (CEOs: Jeong Yong-jun, Kim Dae-hwan) and achieved the result of defeating Daichi Abe, the champion in three sports: judo, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts.

Daichi Abe has 5 wins and 6 losses in the MMA major leagues, including UFC in the US, ONE Championship in Singapore, and Rizin in Japan. At the opening of the 2024 Japan Martial Arts Expo, he attacked first with active striking, clinches, and takedowns.

Taeyoung Yoon gave up the top position, but he tightly held on to Daichi Abe with both hands and both feet and finished the ground attack without any major damage. After being hit with a left punch, he countered with a head kick and gave up the back position, but was not affected by the sleeper hold technique.

In the second round, Taeyoung Yoon took the lead with the front foot, right hook, and one-two punch. Daichi Abe aimed for an arm joint attack and a triangle choke, but was unable to achieve his goal.

Afterwards, Yoon Tae-young hit the target with his left hand. The match was stopped after the shaken Daichi Abe was pushed into the cage and hit with left and right elbows. This is because both players were bleeding a lot on their eyes.

Daichi Abe’s wounds were so severe that the bone surrounding his left eye was visible. The referee at the opening of the 2024 Japan Martial Arts Expo declared a TKO victory for Taeyoung Yoon, who was able to continue the fight after stopping bleeding near his right eye.

Taeyoung Yoon was inferior in grappling to Daichi Abe, who won the Japan High School Sports Competition (Interhigh) -90kg in Judo and was the DEEP Pancrase two-team mixed martial arts champion, but the striking match was different.

Daichi Abe also has considerable standing striking experience, including winning the Rise rookie tournament and becoming the J-Network champion. Two weeks ago, he won a unanimous decision over Kontulai (36, Thailand), the heavyweight champion of the International Muay Thai Studies Association (IMSA).

Therefore, it is significant that Yoon Tae-young had a clear advantage in striking to the extent that Daichi Abe had no significant attack in the second round. It was a performance worthy of confident expressions of victory, saying, “It’s a pity that it didn’t end well.”

After the opening of the martial arts expo, he expressed his intention to enter Japan, saying, “If you call me again, I will show better performance.” KMMA Fighter Agency said, “This is the biggest win of Yoon Tae-young’s mixed martial arts career. “We will continue to support the performance of Korean athletes,” he pledged.
