What changes are being considered for road tax

The Ministry of Finance is considering the possibility of readjusting the traffic fees due to the shortfalls in revenue. According to reports, such a plan is under consideration by the ministry, and is expected to be implemented immediately after the completion of the payment of traffic fees for 2024, scheduled for February 29.

At the same time, the ministry is also considering the possibility of providing incentives for the withdrawal of vehicles over 20 years old, with the aim of reducing their circulation.

The main problem for the ministry is that over the past 13 years, when emissions-based road taxes have been in place, many vehicles with modern anti-pollution technology have been sold, causing a drop in tax revenue.

Revenues from road taxes amount to approximately 1.2 billion euros annually. However, the current calculation method does not appear to meet demand and revenue shortfalls are predicted in the medium term. For this reason, adjustments are expected in order to maintain the target of 1.2 billion euros.
