RKC Waalwijk is grateful to the medical people after the serious incident with goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen on Saturday evening during the Eredivisie match against Ajax. The 28-year-old Vaessen was resuscitated on the field at the Mandemakers Stadium, but it seems that there is nothing serious with his heart.
“We are all very shocked. What we have seen is extremely intense,” Frank van Mosselveld, general manager of RKC, said. ESPN. “But I think we can pay a big compliment to all the medical people in the stadium.”
The Eredivisie match in Waalwijk was almost over on Saturday when Brian Brobbey accidentally collided hard with Vaessen’s head with his foot. The goalkeeper was unconscious and initially did not respond to anything.
The players of RKC and Ajax were in great panic, while medical staff rushed to the scene. “We all know what happened to Abdelhak Nouri in the past,” Van Mosselveld continued.
“The protocol has since been tightened and that protocol has now been followed. If someone does not respond and you don’t know exactly what happened, you have to start CPR immediately. Fortunately, Etienne recovered on the field, but he has been out for quite some time.” “I was unconscious. Luckily that was due to the tap on his head and probably not due to something with his heart.”

‘It has a huge impact’
During the resuscitation, players stood around Vaessen to prevent the serious situation from being visualized. Cloths were also placed around him and he was shielded by cloths and carried off the field on a stretcher. Van Mosselveld: “It was very intense to see. It was quite frightening. It has a huge impact when you see something like that happen to a teammate.”
The RKC players were badly affected and did not want to continue playing. That didn’t happen, the match was permanently stopped. Vaessen was in the dressing room at the time, where he was being treated by ambulance personnel.
“Etienne has been stabilized and has to undergo scans in hospital. Let’s hope they are positive. He has no memory of the incident.”
