Riz Ahmed, First Muslim Nominated For Best Actor In Oscars 2021

LOS ANGELES, KOMPAS.TV British actor and musician Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim to be nominated in the Best Actor category at the Academy Award or Oscar 2021. This nomination was earned for his role in the film “Sound of Metal”.

Ahmed, who is originally from Pakistan, plays a rock drummer who has lost his hearing.

“When you hear your own name (mentioned in the Oscar nomination), it is a strange feeling, I secretly thank you and feel grateful,” the 38-year-old said as quoted by Al Jazeera.

“Everyone in this film is doing (their best) because they want to push themselves and go further than before. We are all trying to see how far we can go, “he added.

The world of acting is nothing new for Ahmed. Previously, he won the Emmy Cup in 2017.

In 2019, a Muslim actor won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He is Mahershala Ali, who played a great role in the film “Moonlight”. However, until now, no Muslim actor has ever won the best lead actor category.
