The long coast is crowded with people, and the soft sand is covered with colorful surfboards. The National Surfing Competition was recently held in Riyue Bay, Wanning, Hainan. Infected by the enthusiastic atmosphere of the event, many tourists went into the sea to experience the fun of surfing together with the athletes.

“My friends and I came to Riyue Bay to practice surfing after doing enough homework.” Yang Yao, a tourist wearing surfing clothes, colorful sunscreen mud, and holding a blue surfboard, said that in addition to watching high-level competitions, we can also personally It’s a worthwhile trip to experience surfing.

In the recurring waves, surfers keep swimming towards the sea, standing quickly against the wind and waves, jumping and dancing on the top of the waves… This wonderful and passionate scene has become a norm in Riyue Bay.

Riyue Bay is a famous surfing resort in China. Because of the clear water quality, suitable water temperature and long and powerful waves, it attracts surfers from all over the world.

“After surfing became an Olympic event, this niche sport began to be favored by more and more young people. Local governments are also constantly exploring the use of resource endowments to expand the ‘sports + tourism’ industry, promote national fitness, and help rural areas Revitalization,” said Ye Nan, deputy mayor of Wanning City.

Nowadays, five to six thousand people flock to Riyue Bay every day, and the number can reach tens of thousands in peak season. Surfing has boosted the tourism industry in Wanning City and also brought about changes in Tianxin Village, which is adjacent to Riyue Bay.

Tianxin Village, with a total population of more than 1,970 people, was once an unknown small fishing village of the Li ethnic group, with poor transportation and backward development. “In the past, villagers could only rely on fishing and farming for a living, and their incomes were low. Therefore, young people in the village chose to go out to make a living.” Chen Zhenguo, secretary of the Tianxin Village Party branch, said.

The rise of surfing has changed the destiny of the villagers. Currently, dozens of teenagers from Tianxin Village have become well-known surfers in China, and some of them have won national surfing championships and Asian championships.

Also because of surfing, Tianxin Village has become the “background of life” for surfers, and supporting industries such as B&Bs, restaurants, and surf clubs have continued to develop.

The 25-year-old Hu Zhigang stayed in Shenzhen to work after graduating from university. Because he saw the continuous development of the surfing industry in his hometown, he returned to the village in 2021 to open a surfing club called “Left Turn” to provide surfing training.

“I’m glad I made the choice to return to my hometown to start a business.” Hu Zhigang said that his club business is very good, with an income of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan a year. This year he expanded the club’s business and opened a restaurant serving local specialties. He hopes that tourists who come to surf can eat Li cuisine and experience more local culture.

Like Ho Chi Gang, the villagers of Tianxin Village are actively embracing the “wave” trend. At present, nearly 70 villagers in the village have become surfing instructors after receiving systematic training; many villagers have opened surfing clubs, specialty restaurants and bars, and B&Bs.

“Hundreds of young people from the village have returned from big cities to start businesses in the village.” Chen Zhenguo said that the village, which was once a bit lonely, is now full of vitality and openness.

Because they are optimistic about the development of surfing and the prospects of Tian Xincun, many tourists who come to surf have become “merchants”. After Tang Xin came to Riyue Bay to surf two years ago, he rented a villager’s house in Tianxin Village and opened a B&B. As more and more people fall in love with surfing, Tang Xin’s B&B has also become popular among tourists, and he often cannot book a room.

Today, there are 36 B&Bs and 30 surf clubs in the village. Around surfing, commercial facilities such as supermarkets and restaurants have gradually taken shape, creating employment for nearly a quarter of the villagers.

“In addition to surfing, a series of cultural and sports activities are also often performed in Riyue Bay. Beach yoga, sunset parties, beach music festivals, trendy sports festivals… these activities enrich the experience of tourists.” Ye Nan said that in order to further develop Wanning In the sports industry, the local area is committed to building a differentiated bay area brand. Shimei Bay in Wanning is becoming well-known by diving enthusiasts, and the Shenzhou Peninsula has also become a paradise for motorboat enthusiasts.

“The charm of sports not only brings health and happiness to people, it can also benefit a village and drive a city.” Ye Nan said.
