The Turkish fiancée of the murdered Hashakji, who called the trial a “farce”, also joined the criticism.

The trial was closed to the public

31 people were investigated in Saudi Arabia for the murder committed in 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Of these, 21 were arrested and the trial then began with 11 of them. However, it took place behind closed doors and, according to critics, did not meet international standards. The prosecutor’s office demanded the death sentences for five convicts.

Last December, the Riyadh Criminal Court passed the death penalty over five people convicted according to the then report of direct involvement in the murder. Another three people were sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison, and the remaining three were released.

Khasakji’s children forgave the killers this year, saving five convicts from serving their death sentences, but the guilty verdict has not changed.

The journalist’s body has not yet been found

The liquidation of Hashakji, who had come to the consulate to obtain identity documents and whose body had not yet been found, turned the world’s attention to Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. Many states believe that he was the one to kill an uncomfortable critic. But the prince refuses.

The next process was launched this year in Turkey, who is on trial for murder in the absence of 20 people, including bin Salman’s co-workers. In Turkey, the maximum possible sentence is life imprisonment.
