Riyadh Agrees to Buy Artificial Drones from Turkey: Deals Secured by President Erdogan for Turkey’s Economy

Riyadh

Government Arab Saudi agreed to buy an artificial drone Turki when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came to visit the country and meet the Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

The drone deal by Riyadh is one of several lucrative contracts that Erdogan has secured for Turkey’s struggling economy.

Erdogan’s visit to Saudi Arabia comes as Ankara is reaping the benefits of its recent diplomatic push to improve ties with the Arab Gulf powers. Thus as reported ReutersTuesday (18/7/2023).

Saudi news agency SPA reported that Erdogan and MBS attended a signing ceremony between Turkish defense company Baykar and the Saudi Defense Ministry.

Erdogan arrived in Jeddah, Saudi, on Monday (17/7) local time for the first stop in a series of visits to the Gulf region.

In a statement via Twitter, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman revealed that Riyadh would procure the drones “with the aim of increasing the readiness of the kingdom’s Armed Forces and strengthening its defense and manufacturing capabilities.”

However, SPA did not mention detailed information about the value of the deal and the number of drones to be purchased.

Investment and funding from the Gulf region has helped ease pressure on Turkey’s economy and currency reserves since 2021, when Ankara launched a diplomatic push to improve relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
