Riyad Mahrez Joins Al-Ahli: A New Star in the Influential Arab League

The Algerian Riyad Mahrez, recent winner of the treble with Manchester City, has become the latest star to sign for the increasingly influential Arab league by joining Al-Ahli, who has paid some 30 million pounds (34.8 million euros) by the 32-year-old right winger.

Mahrez leaves the Premier League after 284 games in the top English competition with a record of 82 goals and 65 assists.

He began his adventure in England in January 2014, when he joined Leicester City to help the club win the second division that year, promotion to the Premier; and to win that mythical league title in the 2015-16 season.

Later he signed for Pep Guardiola’s City, where he has won 11 titles, including the treble last season and four leagues in five years.

“Playing for Manchester City has been an honor and a privilege. I came to City to win trophies and enjoy my football and I have achieved that and much more”, he said in what is his last interview for the “citizen” club.

He also admits that “these years have been unforgettable at this club, working with incredible players, fantastic supporters and the best coach in the world.”

Riyad Mahrez follows in the footsteps of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Kante, Ruben Neves or Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool legend who has been named the new manager of Al-Ettifaq.

All of them have left for a league, controlled and financed mostly by the Saudi government, with great ambitions to become one of the top 5 leagues in the world.
