RIVM: vaccines provide excellent protection against serious disease due to delta variant

Since the last week of June, the delta variant of the virus has virtually driven out other variants.

Until mid-August, the vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization for the delta variant was 92 percent for the group of 15-49 year olds, 97 percent for the 50-69 group and 91 percent for the over-70s. Protection against IC admission was 99, 97 and 95 percent for these groups, respectively.

4.6 percent of hospital admissions involved patients who had been fully vaccinated for more than two weeks at the time of their first day of illness. 88 percent (nearly 13,000 people) had not been vaccinated.

The remaining hospital admissions were either people who had only had a first shot of Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or people whose vaccination was completed less than two weeks before their admission.

Inventory by pulmonologists

With regard to the protection of vaccines, the figures look even more favorable than the numbers collected by Dutch pulmonologists in a much smaller-scale study of all patients in a given week.

The pulmonologists then found that about 10 percent of all covid patients in Dutch hospitals had been fully vaccinated for more than two weeks.

These data concerned all Dutch citizens whose vaccination status has been registered. It is possible that some of the not fully vaccinated patients admitted to hospital during this time have had an infection.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign, there are no indications that the very high protection of the vaccines against hospital and ICU admission is declining over time.
