RIVM starts research on sexually transmitted diseases in the Netherlands

On 27 September, the RIVM launched an investigation into the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the Netherlands. Those are chlamydia and gonorrhea. RIVM wants to know how often these sexually transmitted diseases occur among people between the ages of 16 and 34. The first results are expected in 2024.

RIVM reports this on its website. Complete National Sexual Health Study. This is a collaboration between Statistics Netherlands (CBS), Rutgers, Soa Aids Nederland, RIVM and GGD. The data in that study doesn’t provide a good picture of the two sexually transmitted diseases, RIVM says, because only people with complaints are included. But an STI also occurs in people who have no symptoms.

Participants in the STI study will be sent a free home test. It is being examined in the GGD Amsterdam laboratory for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
