RIVM reports fewer hospital admissions (156) than week earlier NOW

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reports 156 new hospital admissions in the daily update on Friday. That is less than a week earlier, when 225 new admissions were reported to RIVM. These corona patients were not all admitted to the hospital on the same day.

In addition, RIVM reports that another 144 people have died from the effects of the coronavirus, which has increased the death toll to 3,459. That’s more new deaths than exactly a week ago (115). Not all of these people died on the same day.

New 1,235 confirmed infections are known to the institute. A total of 30,449 persons were tested positive. Of this group, 9,465 persons were or have been admitted to hospital.

In reality, more people have been infected with the coronavirus and died from COVID-19 than has been measured. Because not everyone is tested for the coronavirus, not all infections and deaths are included in the official statistics. However, the test capacity has expanded considerably in recent weeks.

RIVM: Measures generally seem to work

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announced earlier on Friday that approximately two thousand more people died last week than the average in the first ten weeks of this year. This excess mortality indicates that more people have died from COVID-19 than reported.

“The figures of the past few days fit the picture that the measures generally seem to work,” reports RIVM. “The number of new reports per day of hospitalized patients is still declining. The number of patients dying is also decreasing, but less rapidly than hospital admissions.”
