That is why the institute has issued a so-called boiler alert for Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, North Holland and Flevoland. The advice is not to burn wood there.
“By not burning, you prevent health problems and (odor) nuisance for yourself and in your environment,” the RIVM explains. The advice applies for the rest of the day. Tomorrow morning the wind will probably gradually increase, allowing smoke to spread more. The advice does not apply to people who only have a wood stove to heat their home.
Wood smoke contains all kinds of harmful substances, from carcinogenic substances known as PAHs to particulate matter and from benzene to carbon monoxide. When there is little wind, smoke containing these substances lingers longer in the streets.
According to CBS figures that were also published today, one in three households with a fireplace or wood stove used more fuel last year than before. The high gas price in particular was a reason for this. A smaller group (19 percent) of fireplace and stove owners actually started burning less wood. Climate and health were mentioned as reasons for this, as was the price of fuel wood and pellets.
