Several tens of thousands of people can get the shot in these weeks. They are invited because they may be at the greatest risk of becoming infected with the virus. Transgender people and men who have sex with men are eligible for the shot if they are HIV positive or take medication to prevent them from contracting HIV.
Hospital
The monkeypox virus has been diagnosed in 925 people in the Netherlands in recent months. That figure will be updated on Thursday. At least six people have been treated in a hospital because of their complaints. Most positive tests have been registered in Amsterdam-Amstelland and Haaglanden, which is why those regions started vaccinating last week. In the first days, about 40 percent of the invited people showed up to get the shot. The GGDs attribute this to the summer holidays.
Utrecht started vaccinating last Saturday. IJsselland, Drenthe and Gelderland-Midden started on Monday, and Limburg South on Tuesday. The regions of Rotterdam-Rijnmond and Friesland start on Thursday and Hollands Noorden on Friday. The monkeypox vaccination will start next week in Twente and Zaanstreek-Waterland. It is not yet known when the first people in the other regions will receive their first shot.
