Rivian’s Patented Solution for Efficient Electric Car Charging: Pass-through Charging

The American manufacturer has patented an interesting solution for charging electric cars.

In addition to increasing the range, electric car manufacturers are trying to make charging options more efficient in various ways. The American company Rivian has now come up with an interesting alternative, which patented its idea.

Can an electric car also serve as an extension cable? According to Rivian, the possibility is there. Last month, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published Rivian’s patent called “pass-through charging”, which was filed by the automaker at the end of 2021.

The system could allow charging between electric cars using a single source, which could be used in confined spaces. The patent application states that the system sends electrical power to the battery and external system from a single charging system or electrical power source.

Using the installed switching device in the car, the electric car essentially turns into an extension cable, thanks to which the received energy can be directed instead of the battery to the output, from which the other electric car standing next to it will receive energy.

The patent application also includes drawings of the CCS (Combined Charging Standard) connectors, which show that both AC and DC charging can be used. Whether this system has a chance to be implemented is still debatable, but it is not the only innovation that Rivian is trying to achieve.

Already at the beginning of this year, the American electric car manufacturer patented a climate-controlled charger system that will help the battery reach the ideal charging temperature.

The main faces of the ambitious project are the R1T pick-up and the R1S seven-seater SUV. Rivian, which claims to be a car company intended for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers, is also preparing new platforms on which smaller and more affordable models will be built, which at the same time should maintain the brand’s DNA.
