Along with the mid-size crossover Rivian R2, its younger brother with the R3 index is also shown. Moreover, if the “two” was announced in advance, and its teasers were published over the past month, then the debut of the “troika” turned out to be an unexpected surprise. And the Rivian R3 itself has a format that is atypical for the American auto industry.
The exact dimensions of the R3 model have not been published; only the wheelbase is stated to be 2800 mm. Judging by the images, this is a classmate of the BMW X1 or Audi Q3. Although in profile the Rivian R3 evokes completely different associations: the characteristic shape of the rear roof pillars refers to the Volkswagen Golf or Lancia Delta hatchbacks of the eighties, and also… to the Russian Niva!
The Rivian R3 has a full-fledged fifth door, but in addition, you can separately raise the rear window for transporting long items. There is also a front trunk. The interior is designed in the same style as the R2 crossover: they are even similar in the two glove boxes in the front panel. The back of the rear sofa is divided into three parts. Large panoramic roof – without sliding section.
Rivian R3 is built on the same platform as the R2. It has a spring suspension all around, and the traction battery is assembled from cells of the new 4695 format. Versions with one, two or three electric motors are promised: in the first case, only rear-wheel drive, the other two modifications are all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, there are no other details yet.
At the same time, the “hot” Rivian R3X is shown. It has just three electric motors, as well as increased ground clearance, different wheels, modified bumpers and different interior trim. Acceleration to “hundreds” should take less than three seconds.
If the production Rivian R2 is promised in 2026, the starting price has already been named and orders are open, then the company has not said a word about the prospects of the R3 model. Apparently, if the “troika” appears on sale, it will be in three or four years.
