American EV maker Rivian accidentally distributed a software update with the wrong security certificates. The update caused the infotainment system to stop working. Affected Rivian cars ‘may’ have to go to the garage for repairs.
Rivian confirms the problems on social media. “We made a mistake with the 2023.42-ota update,” writes Wassym Bensaid, vice president of software engineering at Rivian. The company accidentally distributed a build with the wrong security certificates. Installing the update therefore gets stuck, causing the infotainment screen and the main instrument cluster screen to stop working, writes Ars Technica.
The update affected “a number” of R1T and R1S vehicles, according to Rivian. In most cases, the rest of the car, apart from the infotainment system, remains functional, Rivian writes. The Rivian app also continues to work. A reset or sleep cycle does not solve the problems.
The automaker says the update has been withdrawn. The update will be released later with the correct certificates. Customer service has contacted affected customers via email and text message and will then review ‘the resolution options’. “In some cases” a physical repair may be necessary, Bensaid writes.
