The US electric car manufacturer Rivian has launched its third model, the R2, which is smaller and cheaper, but just as versatile as the larger and more expensive crossover R1S.
Rivian’s offer currently consists of the R1T pickup truck and the R1S crossover. Both are not the most gentle on the buyer’s wallet, so changes in this respect are promised by the new model R2, which looks like a reduced copy of the R1S. It’s a five-seater crossover that’s 38cm shorter, 14cm lower and has a 14cm shorter wheelbase than the R1S, but just as capable of carrying passengers and cargo.
R2 can also fold down not only the backrest of the rear sofa, but also the backrest of the front passenger seat, which will allow longer objects to be transported, and the rear glass can be lowered and “hidden” in the fifth door, providing access to the trunk or making it possible to transport even larger “oversize”.
The R2 will get rear-wheel drive with a single motor, but there will also be four-wheel drive versions with two and three motors.
The R2 is considered a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, but unlike it, the base version will already have a range of up to 480 kilometers, while the equivalent version of the Tesla crossover does not promise more than 375 km. The manufacturer reports that from 10 to 80 percent of the battery can be charged in less than half an hour at fast charging stations.
Although the application for the purchase of the R2 worth at least 45,000 dollars is already open, it is expected in the dealer centers only in the first half of 2026.
