Electric car manufacturer Rivian is developing a new electric car platform that should be available in about 2 years, as the company tries to make their cars more affordable to the general public. This is what the head of the company, RJ Skarinjs, said when he appeared on the “How I Built This” broadcast or podcast.
The company currently produces R1T and R1S off-road vehicles, as well as developed and put into production electric delivery vans. The new platform, called R2, is being built with the idea of producing more affordable cars, and it is known that the first planned model on it is a mid-size SUV that will compete with the Tesla Model Y.
The manager of Rivian states that they are acutely short of machines in the range of 45-50 thousand dollars, so it can be predicted that the starting price of Rivian’s next model will be approximately that.
The electric car manufacturer has gradually managed to increase the production volumes of the R1S and R1T models, but sooner or later it has to come down from the “high shelf” to more affordable machines, and that is exactly what Rivian plans to do. The company has approved plans to build a new factory in the state of Georgia, USA, the value of the project is about 5 billion dollars, which will allow to increase production volumes. The future model will be Rivian’s main task for the foreseeable future, as the company tries to grow, increase production volumes, while dealing with various complications that arise at this time. Tesla has proven that it is possible and Rivian will certainly learn both the good and the bad from Tesla’s growth processes, as Elon Musk’s company becomes one of the leaders in the electric car market.
