About thirty people gathered on the banks of the Tarn in Montauban to pick up waste abandoned by unscrupulous walkers. An initiative co-organized by Team river clean 82 and high school students from Montauban.
Equipped with garbage bags and gloves, around thirty people gathered this Saturday morning rue de Palisse in Montauban. This bank cleaning operation was set up by the Team river clean 82 association, dedicated to cleaning the edges of lakes and rivers in the department, and eco-delegates from the Montalban high school Antoine Bourdelle.
“We have had a Sustainable Development club for two years and eco-delegates have also been put in place. They are the ones who define the projects they want to carry out”, explains Camille Terrier, the principal education adviser at Antoine Bourdelle high school. , in Montauban.
Over several hundred meters, the banks of the Tarn river were inspected by volunteers.
900 kg of waste collected in one morning
“We met the young people 4 or 5 months ago to show them the place we had spotted and then we worked together to communicate about the event”, welcomes Cédric Petibon-Coudol, one of the founders of the Team river clean association 82.
Léna is 16 years old and is in first at Bourdelle. “I’m part of the Sustainable Development group, she says. It’s important to participate in this event today because we have to take care of nature, of the Earth. They are what allow us to live”, she simply recalls. There, she met Justine, an eco-delegate from Jean de Prades high school in Castelsarrasin. “I’m interested in anything to do with environmental protection, which is why I came today when I found out that there was this collection organized. Whenever I can , I do not hesitate to come to this kind of event”, reveals the young girl.
Helped by adults, the two high school girls climbed up the slopes of the bank that day with a whole lot of objects that they believe should have been on a terrace: “chairs, garden tables, a parasol, and even a drying rack”, they are astonished. “There are infrastructures and recycling centers that exist to get rid of things like that”, complain the two volunteers.
In the end, on the morning, nearly 900 kg of waste was removed from the banks and thrown cleanly into skips and containers made available by the town hall and the sirtomad.
In particular, barrels were extracted from the branches. A delicate operation because they were on a steep slope of the bank.
Two meetings next week
Since their creation a little over two years ago, the Team river clean 82 team has collected nearly 70 tons of waste, including 35 tons of tires, or about 4,500 tires and 12 kg of cigarette butts, which represents almost of 60,000 cigarette butts. 15 collective collections were carried out in partnership with other associations and about fifty were made individually or just by a few members of the association.
The next meetings given by the collective are next week! Saturday afternoon, a major cleaning of the Quai de la Daurade in Toulouse is planned and several associations, including Team river clean 82, will take part. A cigarette butt collection is organized the next day in Moissac.
