Rita Zelmane: Remembering the Legacy of the Late Latvian National Opera Soloist

Opera singer Rita Zelmane, former soloist of the Latvian National Opera, passed away on January 21, the opera house informs.

Zelmane studied at the Latvian State Conservatory in the class of Professor Aleksandra Viļumanis, and already then she showed herself as a strong soprano.

The artist became a soloist of the Latvian National Opera in 1963. Her repertoire included such roles as Brunnhilde in Richard Wagner’s opera “Valkyrie”, Bess in George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bessa”, Tatiana in Peter Tchaikovsky’s opera “Eugene Onegin”, Lisa in Peter Tchaikovsky’s opera “The Queen of Spades”, Elvira in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera “Don Juan “, the title role in Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Manon Lescaut”, the title role in Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera “Katerina Izmailova”, the title role in Alfred Kalnin’s opera “Banut”, the title role in Adolf Skulte’s opera “Princess Gundega” and many others.

Zelmane was also the mother of TV and radio personality Ieva Adamss. The two have not had an easy relationship, but Ieva inherited elegance, directness and sharpness in her statements from her mother.
