Since the beginning of June, a number of cases of viral and bacterial meningitis have been recorded in Russia. Doctor of Medical Sciences, immunologist Vladislav Zhemchugov spoke about the danger of infection transmission in hot weather.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges. It is of two types according to the pathogen. The virus lives in hot weather in closed stagnant water bodies. This is one of the varieties of intestinal flu, transmitted by the fecal-oral route. The microbe is transmitted by airborne droplets, lives in the nasopharynx, causes severe purulent meningitis, the specialist explained.
You can catch a virus when swimming in the heat, and a bacterium – when communicating. At the same time, the infected person may not know that he has pathogens on his mucous membranes, and will assume that this is a common cold.
In severe cases, the infection leads to inflammation of the meninges, the symptoms of which are convulsions, loss of creation and even death, the immunologist said in an interview with radio Sputnik.
