TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA- The 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) revealed that one in three Indonesian children is at risk of anemia.

Anemia is a condition when the blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells.

In fact, children who are anemic and don’t get immediate treatment can affect a child’s brain development.

This was revealed by the President of the Indonesian Nutrition Association (INA) Dr. dr. Luciana B. Sutanto, MS, SpGK(K).

“There is an impact on children’s brain development when anemia,” he said at the Joint Media Gathering Prevent, Optimize Cognitive Advanced Generation, held by Danone Indonesia and PT Sarihusada Generasi Mahardhika, Thursday (31/8/2023).

According to Dr. Luci, the impact of anemia will continue.

Especially in children aged 2-5 years, where brain development is still going on.

At that age, said Dr. Luci, 90 percent of brain development is still being formed.

When a child is five years old, brain development has indeed been formed.

However, according to Dr. Luci, this situation is not completely safe.

“If a child remains anemic (as a result) is tired, lethargic, forgetful and so on, his studies (at school) can be disrupted,” concluded Dr. Luci.
