Risk of Severe Storms Rises in New York Area Ahead of Holiday Weekend – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – The Authority on Weather (LAEET) is tracking the possibility of severe storms in parts of the tri-state area just before a cold front arrives on the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

A lot could change as the system approaches, but at this point, damaging winds and flash flooding appear to be the main threats. Hail and tornadoes are unlikely.

The worst part is expected to come on Friday night, as the cloudiness progresses and increases on Thursday. New York City and the immediate surrounding areas are in the possible severe weather hazard zone, with severe storms more likely to the south and west of the five boroughs, according to the most recent forecast.

Storms associated with the front could impact travel at airports like Chicago and Atlanta before they move over the I-95 corridor on Friday. Showers and storms will persist through Saturday, but conditions will improve Sunday and Monday, with highs expected to exceed 80 degrees by Memorial Day afternoon.

The rest of next week will be very hot and muggy with highs in the 80s and 80s.
