After the failure of the blitzkrieg at the beginning of 2022, there was a high probability that Russia would use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Stanislav Belkovsky assures.
Today, the likelihood of Russia striking Ukraine with tactical nuclear weapons is lower than it was in 2022.
This opinion was expressed by the well-known Russian political strategist Stanislav Belkovsky in interview journalist Yulia Latynina.
In his opinion, the risk of using nuclear weapons was greatest at the first stage of the “special operation” in 2022, when the failure of the three-day blitzkrieg became obvious to the Kremlin.
“Last year, Putin was psychologically prepared for this… At the beginning of “special operation Z”, when he was somewhat disappointed with the first defeats of the Russian troops and the fact that Kiev had not been taken in three days, he talked about the Japanese scenario. Naturally, not publicly, but through all sorts of different speakers who know the point of view of the “leader” and broadcast it … He also cosplays the United States, wants to do it like his “big brother”. He thought that Ukraine after that, like Japan, would capitulate“, – said Belkovsky.
He recalled how in May last 2022, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, in an interview with Japanese media, threatened Kyiv with a “Japanese scenario” with strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to the political strategist, then he broadcast Putin’s point of view.
“But now Putin burned out, in my opinion. He became convinced of the ineffectiveness of its use in Ukraine, this would not fundamentally change the course of events … In 2023, rather, there was an understanding that even if tactical nuclear weapons were used, this would not lead to the Japanese scenario of 1945. Ukraine will not be demoralized and defeated to such an extent as to capitulate. But the retaliatory strike may well be devastating“, – said Piontkovsky.
Another argument “against” for Moscow, in his opinion, was the position of China, which is striving for an early end to the war in order to stabilize world trade and its own economy.
Earlier, Dialog.UA reported that Russian State Duma deputy Nilov threatened with nuclear weapons after the drone attack on Moscow.
We also wrote that Zhdanov warned what Putin would do when nuclear weapons arrived in Belarus.
