Risk of Losing Production of Škoda Enyaq Electric Car: Union Leader Claims

The company’s spokesperson, Pavel Jína, responded to the statement of the car company’s union leader, Jaroslav Povšík, in E15, according to which there is a threat that the production of the Enyaq electric car will be moved from the plant in Mladá Boleslav to the factory of the Volkswagen parent concern in Cvikov, Germany. According to Povšík, the future of the factory in Vrchlabí, where gearboxes are manufactured, is also unclear.

“Skoda Auto has a clearly defined long-term strategy for each production plant and its employees. In the future, we plan to produce electric cars, possibly components, in all three plants in the Czech Republic,” said Jína. The spokesman repeated the automaker’s earlier statement that enyaq production remains at the main Mladá Boleslav plant and there are no plans to move it.

“Currently, at the level of the Volkswagen Group, all potential scenarios are being discussed as part of the ongoing transition to electromobility, including the dates for the start of production of new electric models. No final decision has been made yet. Therefore, we ask for your understanding, but we will not comment on any speculation regarding future plans,” added the car company’s spokesperson.

Škoda is at risk of losing production of the Enyaq electric car, claims the union leader

The E15 newspaper wrote that at the level of the VW concern, this is the final form of the 72nd planning round, part of which is the decision on which plants will produce individual models. Povšík is participating in the meeting and, according to the trade unionist, no decision has been made yet. Where the enyaqs will be produced should be clear in October or November, when the planning round will close. The decision will be made by the Board of Directors of the VW Group and the Supervisory Board.

The Škoda Enyaq electric car has been produced in Mladá Boleslav since November 2020 and, according to Povšík, is very profitable for the car company. “We are trying very hard not to lose him. It is Škoda’s first fully electric car, thanks to which we meet emission limits and avoid fines,” he said. According to Povšík, the future of the Škoda Auto plant in Vrchlabí in Trutnovsk, which he compared to the Titanic, is also uncertain.

In a sent statement, Jína stated that the Mladá Boleslav plant will be the first Škoda Auto production plant to completely switch to the production of electric cars. Kvasiny will follow.

“The plant in Vrchlabí and the production of components in Mladá Boleslav are an integral part of the transformation plan towards electromobility and include the continuous increase of capacities for the assembly of battery systems and the introduction of the production of other electrical components, which include electric motors or large components produced by die-casting,” he wrote.

This spring, Škoda Auto announced that it wants to have a total of six fully electric models by 2026. In addition to the modernized Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe, it will offer a small SUV with the working name Small, a compact SUV named Elroq, a large seven-seater SUV named Space, and it has also recently included an electric Combi in its plans. The automaker plans to invest 5.6 billion euros (roughly 133.6 billion crowns) in electromobility over the next five years.
