Rising Water Levels in Mjøsa: Concerns for the Diving Tower

The water in Mjøsa is rising, and it is expected that the flood peak has not been reached.

The interior is still affected by the extreme weather Hans, and the water is rising in the lakes.

Now there is a danger that the diving tower may come loose as a result of the flood, according to mayor Einar Busterud.

– Flows like a cork

The forecasts indicate that the water in Mjøsa will rise more than during the 1995 flood. The mayor is concerned about whether the tower can withstand the high water level.

– It floats like a cork, and if the water is high, it floats extra high, says Busterud.

He explains that the diving tower is not built to withstand the flood heights to come.

National celebrity

The diving tower officially opened in June 2015, and had already become a national celebrity as Norway’s most expensive diving tower.

The starting point for the municipality was NOK 40,000. But the price tag for the municipality ended up being approximately NOK 12 million.

In total, the diving tower must have cost over 20 million. The remaining sum must have been covered by betting funds, among other things.

But even after it opened in 2015, there have been problems with the tower. In the winter of 2016, the diving tower froze, so that it could not move with the water level.

A little during the 1995 flood

Tuomo Faloranta in NVE explains that the flood risk in the interior is returning in the waterways that were most exposed earlier this week.

– The exception is Mjøsa, which is still rising, says Faloranta.

He explains that Mjøsa will continue to rise until Saturday, by about half a metre. It will stay high for a few days before it starts to drop again.

Faloranta explains that it is not expected that the flood will reach a red level.

Several people have compared the flood that came with storm Hans to the flood in 1995. At that time, large parts of the towns around Mjøsa and areas around Glomma were under water.

– It’s almost like the 1995 flood, but maybe a little less, says Faloranta.

There may be new forecasts for the water level in Mjøsa during Friday, he says.
