Bodily harm, rape, theft: Our train stations are increasingly becoming hotspots of violence!
In the secret document “Violent Offenses on Railway Facilities in 2022”, which BILD has exclusively available, the Federal Police summarized in detail how dangerous it is now at German railway stations: Compared to 2019, there were 28.4 percent MORE acts of violence recently. Compared to 2021 – when there were significantly fewer train passengers due to Corona – the increase is even 38.6 percent. Recently, there were more than two such crimes per hour!
Increase in violence during the period of the 9-euro ticket
The main focal points are the main train stations in Hamburg, Hanover and Nuremberg, as well as in Frankfurt/Main, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Dortmund, Leipzig and Düsseldorf.
The federal police recorded a violent increase in violence during the period of the 9-euro ticket, in the evenings and on weekends. The number of acts of violence at train stations rose by 31 percent in these summer months, and by as much as 46 percent in regional and local trains.
Particularly alarming: “The use of knives and other dangerous objects represents an increasing problem area in the overall assessment (2022-2019),” says the management report.
► The number of crimes in which knives were used has increased by 44.5 percent since 2019!
► The use of dangerous tools has even increased by 80.4 percent since 2019.
In 2022, 5,461 travelers were victims of threats – a 120 percent increase!
The number of physical injuries increased by 22 percent compared to 2019. According to the federal police, 53 percent of the suspects were German nationals and 47 percent non-German.
78 travelers intentionally pushed onto the track
Sexual offenses (rape, sexual assault and child abuse) have increased by 43 percent. Hard to believe: in 2022 there were 78 cases in which travelers were intentionally pushed onto the track. 57 people were injured (13 of them seriously), one died. In 2019 there were 60 incidents.
And the number of thefts at our train stations has also increased significantly! “The numbers are frightening and people avoid these places,” says Manuel Ostermann, head of the German federal police union to BILD. “We urgently need the 3,500 additional officers for the railway police area in order to be able to counteract this development noticeably.”
