Rising Utility Rates and Potential Causes in Ukraine for the Summer of 2023

Some rates have increased in the summer of 2023. In particular, the cost of electricity has almost doubled and now amounts to 2.64 hryvnia per kilowatt.

Why might rates rise?

The government announced a “freeze” of some tariffs. Until the end of the heating season, the cost of electricity will remain stable, despite the state of the energy system.

To reduce their utility bills, Ukrainians can apply for a subsidy. According to Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, everyone in need will be provided with it.

You need to understand that utilities increase in winter due to heating. The gas tariff should remain at the level of 7.96 hryvnia per cubic meter from the regulator Naftogaz. Other companies have this price:

Water tariffs should also remain unchanged. Note that the cost of this utility service is divided into the price of water supply and drainage. The tariff itself is set by the decision of local authorities. Now residents of Zaporozhye pay a high price for this service. For them, drainage costs 25 hryvnia per cubic meter, water supply costs 40.51 hryvnia per cubic meter.

The wave of concern over rising tariffs is not unfounded. In particular, a likely increase in the price of electricity may occur if the power grid is significantly damaged. However, the growth of this tariff was made impossible by previous actions of the regulator. During the unheated season, critical enterprises were equipped with special protection systems. A significant amount of electricity has been accumulated in storage facilities. It should be noted that now Ukraine even sells these raw materials abroad.
