I can’t blow out the candle. I can’t inflate a balloon. The number of such children is said to be increasing. Dentist Yuko Teruyama says, “This is because people are eating softer foods more often and chewing less often. Problems related to oral function are not just an issue for the elderly; they are already starting to occur in teenagers.”

Half the class didn’t inflate their balloons.

A few years ago, when I gave a class at an elementary school to teach about the importance of the mouth and teeth, I was surprised to find that more than half of the children in the class did not blow up their balloons.

This is not only due to problems with lung capacity, but also because the muscles used to open and close the mouth, such as the orbicularis oris, have not developed, making it difficult to purse the mouth properly.

I have also heard that many children are unable to put out candles for similar reasons.

The lack of development of the muscles around the mouth in children is clearly reflected in the fact that many children breathe through their mouth. According to a study published in 2021 by Associate Professor Issei Saito of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, 30.7% of Japanese children (3 to 12 years old) The results showed that the patient had an open mouth, meaning that he was breathing through his mouth.

It is said that about 80% of people with “covert mouth breathing”, who actually breathe through their mouth even when they think they are closing it, fall into this category.

One of the major causes of mouth breathing is underdevelopment of the muscles around the mouth, such as the cheeks and tongue, including the orbicularis oris muscle mentioned earlier.
