Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Entering the 20th month of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western allies are focused on helping Kyiv to return its territory.

Meanwhile, tensions are occurring in other parts of Europe which have actually been rising since the 1990s. Analysts have also expressed their concerns about the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo.

Over the past few months, there have been various problems in the area. Last September, violence occurred in the northern region of Kosovo. Serbia also responded by pouring military force into the border area.

It is feared that this conflict will spread further in southern Europe. In fact, the world’s attention is still focused on the war in Ukraine.

“The conflict in Kosovo is critical,” said analysts, quoted from CNBC International, Thursday (5/10/2023).

“Resolving the conflict in Kosovo and Serbia is no longer a matter of politics. It is a serious issue that has an impact on Europe,” said Engjellushe Morina and Majda Ruge, public policy experts from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).

The recent conflict between Serbia and Kosovo was sparked by an ethnic war. The northern part of Kosovo, which borders Serbia, is predominantly occupied by Serbs.

However, as a whole in the country of Kosovo, 93% are ethnic Albanians. Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, does not recognize its neighboring region as an independent country.

Problems occurred in regional elections that saw ethnic Albanians elected in several areas of northern Kosovo. This caused friction between the Serb ethnic community. They boycotted the election results.

Conditions escalated when armed conflict occurred in Banjska, a village in Kosovo. A policeman was shot and died.

Since 1999, NATO has had a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. At that time, an ethnic conflict occurred between Albanians and Serbs in 1998. However, unresolved friction between the two countries made these two regions vulnerable to disputes.
