Most of the country will be very hot, with typhoons pushing up the heat and daytime temperatures soaring to 37 degrees on the 8th, the first day of autumn. The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on the 7th that the perceived temperature would rise to 35 degrees or more in most areas except for Yeongdong and the East Coast of Gangwon Province on the 8th, as the temperature rises in the sun and humidity is added. The Korea Meteorological Administration said, “The possibility of heat-related illness is very high, so you should drink enough water and salt and refrain from outdoor activities as much as possible.”
On the 8th, there are occasional clouds in the country and the east coast is generally cloudy, and the morning minimum temperature nationwide was predicted to be 23 to 27 degrees, and the highest daytime temperature to be 26 to 37 degrees. There will be places with showers centered on the southeastern part of Gyeonggi, the southern inland of Gangwon, the Chungcheong region, and the southern region. The expected precipitation is 5 to 40 mm in the metropolitan area, southern Gangwon inland, and 5 to 60 mm in Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang regions (more than 100 mm in many places in the Jeolla region). In Yeongdong, Gangwon, where typhoons move north and east winds flow in, it will rain 30 to 80 mm (more than 100 mm in many places) until the 8th, and the maximum temperature during the day will be around 30 degrees.
The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that there are areas with showers during this period and areas with very strong rain of around 30 mm per hour (30 to 60 mm in the center of the Jeolla region) accompanied by gusts, thunder and lightning in Yeongdong, Gangwon Province, so be careful. Temperatures will drop temporarily with showers, then rise quickly again when the rain stops.
Heat wave warnings continue every day, and the number of heat-related illnesses across the country is rapidly increasing. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between May 20 and 6, which the government designated as the ‘heat wave countermeasure period’, the number of cumulative cases of heat illness nationwide was 1,869, an increase of 599 (47%) compared to the same period last year. During this period, 24 people died from heat-related diseases, more than twice the number of deaths from heat-related diseases last year (9). On the 29th of last month, when heatwave warnings were issued across the country, seven people died from heat-related illnesses in one day alone.
Heat illness is an acute illness that occurs when the body is exposed to heat for a long time, and symptoms such as headache, dizziness, muscle spasms, and decreased consciousness appear. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are representative heat-related diseases, and if left untreated, they can lead to death. In particular, the elderly, whose body’s ability to adapt to heat is lower than that of general adults, are more vulnerable to heat-related diseases. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 39.9% of people over the age of 60 accounted for heat-related illnesses until the 6th.
