Rising Star Vaida Vovere Makes Waves with Powerful Song ‘Lūgšana’ Inspired by Women in Ukrainian War

At the beginning of 2024, a young poet, composer and singer Vaida Vovere appeared on the Latvian music scene – she released a single and its video “Prayer”, which was made thinking about the harsh fate of women in the Ukrainian war.

The content-poignant and vocally beautiful song “Lūgšana” was performed for the first time in August, at the original music and poetry concert “Vārsmas”, which took place in the Ojārs Vācieš Museum. For this concert, Vaida Vovere was nominated for the autumn vote of “Kilograms Kultūras” in the “Starts” category, which in turn gave faith that this song and other works should be presented to a wider audience.

“The song speaks of a sense of sisterhood, of the desire to protect women from violence that they have in no way earned or initiated. The song is a collection of strength, defiance and a reference to the first mother – the strength, influence, grace and empathy of the mother opposed to the patriarchal world,” says Vaida Vovere. “That’s the mantra I nursed to myself throughout the war. The insane feeling of helplessness and suffering beyond my control drilled into the back of my head and suffocated me. It remained to pray, not knowing to whom. Repeat to yourself the phrase “don’t lay a finger.”

Young professionals from the Film School of the Latvian Academy of Culture and students from the jazz and musical departments of the NMV Riga Dome Choir School are involved in the creation of a very appealing video. “The goal was to tell this woman’s story to ourselves. Give space to a woman’s point of view.” The video was filmed in the pavilions of the Film School and the Eduards Smilģas Theater Museum, directed by Gerda Jurgena. In addition to Vaida herself, Elīza Apine (bass guitar), Gerda Igaune, Rebeka Rēķe, Lote Voiska and Terēze Anna Pogiņa (vocals) participated in the recording.

A little about the young singer herself. Vaida Vovere started her musical journey in the musical diversion of the 4th secondary school of Jelgava, she is a graduate of the “Spīgo” choir. She spent her high school years in the musical department of the Riga Cathedral Choir School, also applying herself as a musical theater actress – she played the role of Baiba in the musical “Pūt, vējiņi!” by Kārlis Lāčas. and has also participated in other musical performances. She learned composition from Jēkab Jančevskis, practiced poetry at the Literary Academy with poets Ronald Briež and Katrīna Rudzīte. According to herself, her music is a synthesis between musical theater and the indie music genre, but the most important aspect of the music is the lyrics. “Harmony, melody and instrumentation are subordinate to the story and language games. Vaidas Vovere’s music approaches poetry and poetry approaches music. Her creative activity is a search for where language and music overlap, where she lives a free life.”
