This is evident from calculations by RTL Z based on data shared by the Ministry of Finance.
Based on the excise tax revenues, the ministry knows how many liters of petrol and diesel are sold annually. This shows that despite the electrification of the vehicle fleet and the high prices, no less petrol is being used.
180 million liters more
In 2019, more than 5.81 billion liters of gasoline were refueled. After a significant dip in the corona years, we are now already 180 million liters above that. In 2023 we threw 5.99 billion liters into the tank, according to the preliminary figures. That is an increase of 3.1 percent. Compared to 2017, we even consume more than 429 million liters more.
Although motorists sigh at the pump, they puff away the price pain with the same ease.
This also means that CO2 emissions from petrol cars have increased by an equal percentage, despite all intentions to reduce road traffic emissions. Emissions from petrol cars increased from 13 billion kilos of CO2 in 2019 to 13.6 billion kilos. The objective is to make all road traffic emission-free by 2050.
Much less diesel
There is a fairly strong downward trend for diesel. The number of liters of diesel fuel fell by 13 percent between 2019 and 2023, as did the emissions released when burning diesel.
On average, emissions from fossil road traffic are decreasing, but this is happening slowly. In four years by only 6.6 percent.
Corona-effect
The fact that we have started using more petrol has everything to do with corona. At the height of the crisis, traveling by train was quite unpopular, due to the risk of contamination and the obligation to wear face masks.
Since the outbreak of the corona crisis, the fleet has increased by 600,000 cars, the car club BOVAG said. “Occasions were hard to come by at the time.”
Many people who purchased a car at that time did not return to public transport.
“More fuel is therefore also consumed, despite the transition to electric. Not everyone who trades in their diesel immediately buys an EV. Some switch to petrol, others to hybrid. The latter is also increasingly sold new, but still consumes petrol,” said the BOVAG.
