Rising Obesity Cases in Indonesia: A Global Public Health Issue

Indonesia Obesity cases in Indonesia experienced a significant jump in 10 years, from 10.5% in 2007 to 21.8% in 2018. The data was submitted by the Ministry Health last weekend.

According to BetweenDirector of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health Eva Susanti said obesity related to various factors such as energy intake, changes in diet, urbanization, and reduced physical activity.

“Obesity is now classified as a disease that needs comprehensive intervention,” he said.

In fact, obesity has become a global problem that threatens public health. By 2030, one in five women and one in 7 men worldwide is expected to be obese.

This number is equivalent to more than one billion people on Earth. As is known, obesity has a negative impact on health such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and other metabolic and non-metabolic diseases.

Then, actually how how to prevent obesity? Reporting from the official website of the Ministry of Health, here are four ways to prevent obesity:

Eat healthy foods with balanced nutrition, including fruits and vegetables at least 5 servings per day Limit consumption of sugar, salt and fat, according to the recommended daily guidelines:
Maximum sugar 4 tablespoons or 50 grams
Maximum salt 1 teaspoon or 2 grams per day
Maximum fat 5 tablespoons or 67 grams per day Diligent in physical activity or sports, such as walking, cleaning the house, and other types of exercise. For sports, please do it properly, correctly, regularly, and in a measured way. Maintaining an ideal body weight so that it is not a risk to health. The recommended Body Mass Index (BMI) is around 18-23 kg/m2.

To determine BMI, you can use the formula to compare body weight and height, namely:

IMT= BB (kg)/TB2 (meter)

If it is more than 27 kg/m2 then it has entered the obesity category. While 25-27 kg/m2 enters the category obesity.
