In the course of a few hours on Monday afternoon, at least ten moose collisions were reported in Nordland.

– It is more than usual. It is a season for moose collisions, but ten in as short a time as we have today is not that often in Nordland, says operations manager in Nordland police district Tommy Bech to VG.

Bech says that Viltnemda has been contacted in the ten cases.

– Fortunately, there were no injuries, but there was material damage to vehicles, he says.

No areas of the elongated county have shown signs of any greater concentration of moose collisions, says Bech.

There is, however, an exception. One unlucky driver had an unpleasant encounter with two moose.

– There is a vehicle that ran over two moose in the same incident. One of these died instantly, while Viltnemda took care of the other. The driver was not injured, says Bech.

Elk expert Erling Johan Solberg at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research says that this is what it will be like when the snowfall comes.

– It is easier to move by the road, which means that the moose gather there. This happens every year, and the moose move at a faster pace towards the roads when the snow comes.

He emphasizes that moose are particularly active in northern areas due to the snowfall. The expert urges all drivers to be aware that hitting wild animals can happen.

– It is extra risky in these times. You have to be observant.

Operations manager Bech also has a piece of advice for drivers.

– They must be extra vigilant when traveling in traffic.
