In the state of Bremen, more daycare children than ever before have problems with the German language. Language skills vary greatly depending on the district.

The proportion of children who need language lessons in everyday daycare has risen again in Bremen to 48 percent. In Bremerhaven the rate is 55 percent. This emerges from a current survey by the education authority.

The problem continues in primary schools: of the Bremen children who started school in 2022, 40 percent needed language support, in Bremerhaven it was 57 percent.

Language skills vary greatly between districts

According to the report, the figures show that children’s language skills depend on where and in what social environment they grow up. This is also proven by the district evaluation for Bremen: In Gröpelingen, three quarters of prospective first graders need language support, and in Schwachhausen a fifth. According to the report, the numbers also show that the support measures, especially in daycare centers, do not have the desired effect.

Review: This is why the Bremen Senate continues to finance the language daycare centers:

Those: outside and inside.
