Rising Incidence of Respiratory Diseases, Flu, and Covid-19 Cases in Madrid

Carlos Rubio |

Madrid (EFE).- The incidence of respiratory diseases has risen in the last week, from 523 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to almost 800, due to an increase in the transmission of flu – which is causing more hospitalizations of the elderly – and, to a lesser extent, of covid-19 and bronchiolitis in children.

This is evidenced by the reports from the Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance System (SIVIRA) published by the Carlos III Health Institutewho announced a week ago an increase in the positivity of flu and covid-19 tests detected by Primary Care and hospitals, as well as in admissions due to these viruses, to a greater extent, in a population considered at risk.

Cases of bronchiolitis, caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and hospitalizations also increase, mainly in children under 5 years of age, reaching an approximate rate of 4 admissions per 100,000 inhabitants (3.2 in the previous week).

The positivity indicator of tests for flu in Primary Care patients has risen in one week from 13 to 20% and for covid-19, which in previous weeks was above the flu, goes from 13.3 to 14.3 %.

Regarding influenza, unlike the rebound of type B detected last year in the winter season, type A is present in 98.2% of cases and registers “an upward slope” in all groups. of age, according to Primary Care data.

Regarding hospitalizations, the rate due to the flu has risen in the last week to 2.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (it was 0.6 three weeks ago) with a greater impact, as usually happens in each season, in the over 80 years of age (15.5 cases for the aforementioned proportion of inhabitants).

Primary Care pediatricians are detecting the highest rates of Covid-19 in children under 1 year old, a group that has not been exposed to successive waves of SARS-CoV-2 since the pandemic that broke out in 2020.

Hospitalizations linked to this virus continue to rise in the last three weeks.

In the last one, they have increased from 1.7 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants to 1.9 cases, with a greater impact again on those over 80 years of age (16.6 cases per aforementioned proportion of inhabitants).

Bronchiolitis in children shows signs of stabilization

The report released weekly by the Carlos III Health Institute points out that bronchiolitis, which mainly affects children from 0 to 5 years old and those over 80, “increases its slope” but with a tendency towards stabilization in minors.

However, the incidence in children under one year of age exceeds 100 cases per 100,000 children in this age range, a high figure compared to other respiratory diseases.

The new intranasal vaccine against RSV launched its campaign last September, with an inoculation rate in minors that has reached 90% in some communities, which, according to pediatricians and family doctors consulted by EFE, is contributing to stabilization of bronchiolitis and less serious conditions.
