There were 447,000 homeless people in Germany on June 30, 2022, according to an estimate released on Tuesday by the Federal Homeless Association (BAGW) in Berlin.
This figure is almost twice as high as in 2021, when 268,000 people were homeless in Germany.
The association attributes this increase to a variety of factors, including an increase in the number of refugees, especially from Ukraine, who are homeless.
The number of homeless German citizens increased by 5%, while the number of homeless foreign citizens increased by 118%.
There are many reasons why people are homeless. Homeless foreign nationals have mostly never had a home in Germany.
The majority of homeless German citizens – 57% – have lost their housing due to eviction. Other important factors were rent and energy debts (21%), conflicts in the living environment (20%), end of cohabitation or divorce (16%).
BAGW managing director Verena Rosenke warned that inflation, increased costs and rising rents are putting pressure on low-income households and “this is leading to [enerģijas] poverty, rent arrears, and homelessness’.
Particularly vulnerable groups include low-income single-person households, single parents and married couples with many children.
BAGW’s calculations include both those homeless people who live on the street and those who live in shelters or temporarily stay with friends or relatives.
