Rising Homelessness and Feces on the Streets: Oosterdokseiland near Central Station Faces Growing Issue

The number of people sleeping outside in the city has increased in recent months, and this is noticeable on and around Oosterdokseiland near Central Station. During the night, homeless people sleep on the streets, sometimes in groups. There are mattresses, blankets, but also feces on the streets in the area.

This filth becomes clearly visible when AT5 makes a tour through the area. There are turds on the sidewalk behind pillars, between bicycles and even in the stairwell of the parking garage.

“I’ve found a turd next to my scooter several times,” said a man who works in the area. “I could tell from the size of the turd that it probably belonged to a vagrant in dire need.”

A houseboat resident who lives near Museum NEMO agrees: “The problem is that there are no public toilets. Those people have to do it somewhere and then it is in a corner. I tried to put a bucket with a toilet roll in it. .”

The local residents that AT5 spoke to find the situation very distressing and want the pollution in the area to be tackled. “It leads to deterioration. There are always mattresses and there is always rubbish. It’s just dirty,” said a local resident.

The municipality says that the homeless are being addressed about their behavior and that enforcement visits the area daily. To combat pollution, the area will receive extra attention from the cleaning service in the near future.
