Rising Hepatitis B Cases in Jeddah and Mecca Linked to Umrah and Hajj Impact: Expert Reveals

Al-Marsad Newspaper: Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Consultant, Dr. Nizar Bahbari, revealed the reason for the increase in the incidence of hepatitis B in Jeddah by 938 cases in the year 2022, followed by Makkah Al-Mukarramah with 648 cases.

Increase in infections in Jeddah and Mecca

He said that the reason for the increase in infections in Jeddah and Mecca may be due to the fact that a number of those who missed Umrah and Hajj remain in the two cities for a period that may be prolonged, and some of them may be carrying the hepatitis B virus. According to “homeland”.

Contaminated needles

He pointed out that needles contaminated with infected blood are among the main causes of transmission of the virus, as they contribute to the contact of blood with blood, as well as drug needles, in addition to a factor that was previously influential, which is the transmission from the mother to her newborn, a factor that has been eliminated by vaccinations.

Age group

Regarding the reason for the high infection rate among the age group from 15 to 45 years, according to the Ministry of Health’s statistics, Bahbari said, “This may be due to their mothers not receiving vaccinations in that era, so they transmitted the virus to them.”

He pointed out that the large number of female infections with this virus may be because they are more interested than men in dental care, visiting dental clinics, taking care of beautiful nails, and doing pedicures and manicures in salons.
